With regards to SharpDevelop... It all depends on how long ago you looked at it. If it was like 6 Months ago, try it again, as it seems to be a *lot* better. (Especially the text editor component... it's still slow in some situations, but I found it's undergone a re-write and came out much improved).

It looks like a new release could be coming quite soon as well...

For web development there is also the Web Maxtrix.

Mentioning Web Matrix, which is on my "soon to be used" list, reminds me of MSDE as it is also both soon to be used, and downloadable from www.asp.net...

I use SharpDevelop .98 very often and its really good. I would highly recommend trying it out. Its the only viable free useable alternative to Visual Studio and whats more, SD is being implemented in GTK# Mono on Linux too.

You could try Borland's C# Builder Personal. Its free for personal use. I have downloaded it and used it, but frankly its not easy to use.

When you use non-Visual Studio for development work, only then one realises how cool and developer friendly VS is and the kind of quality Microsoft's stuff has. One would be able to use Borland etc. only if one was not aware of VS .NET's existence.

I have a very good code snippet only (non Form's designer) IDE called Snippet Compiler and this is now permanently in my system tray. It also works in Win98 !!!.

I would certainly recommend jEdit, but with the caveat that it might not suit everyone. The various plug-ins that are available make it very powerful, but it definitely feels like the Java app that it is, so isn't entirely natural if you spend the rest of your day in "native" Windows ones.

Thanks for reminding me about the snippet compiler as well. That should help take care of that ever growing "src\misc" folder!
