Whilst contemplating my favoured "UML sketch + prose descriptions" approach, and why I'd just chosen to remove some annotations to make the diagram more readable (IMHO, anyway), this thought sprung to mind:

A picture might be worth a thousand words, but if you've got more than that to say you either need more pictures or some text to go with it.

It might not be original, but it certainly hadn't occurred to me before...
