When Bono quotes your lyrics ...
... you know you're doing something right. Such was the case in 1989s “Rattle and Hum” on the song “God Part II”. I always think it's a cool aside to Canadians that Bono chose to quote Canadian Bruce Cockburn's (pronouned Co-burn) “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” - and the most poetic line in the song, from “God Part II”
“Heard a singer on the radio, late last night
Said he's gonna kick the darkness 'till it bleeds daylight
I, I believe in love”
The verse from “Lovers”:
“When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Sometimes you're made to feel as if your love's a crime
Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight”
Also, The Barenaked Ladies remade “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” back back in '92 - it was a hit in Canada, but obviously they weren't known in the US at that point, nor was the song. But now that people have taken an interest in them and potentially buying their back catalog of albums, it seems like yet another group maybe going to take credit for the lyrics. Sorry Bruce..
