Why limit the password to <= 8 characters ?

We at Core use the services of Net4Domains for our website and emails. They have provided us with fairly good service so far. Enough for me to recommend it to others. But one thing about their system has been irking me sometime now and it has to do with a real stupid decision by their developers(who created their website) in that all passwords are limited to <= 8 characters only. This is something that I have had a lot of problems with. Passwords should be easy to remember and also should ideally contain numeric digits also. Now, it is unfair to assume that everyone will be able to come up with good (read: secret AND easy to remember) passwords that is <= 8 characters. At least I have a problem coming up with it.

Hmm!! lets guess what the developers must have been thinking when deciding upon the password limit :-

1) 8 is a good number (Chinese people believe this, so could the fellow be a Chinese ??)

2) I don't care..

Thing is, the developers at Net4Domains didn't look around enough and/or didn't think enough about usage scenarios before commiting to the stupid 8-char-limit. Maybe allowing more than 8 characters in the password would have taken a teeny-weeny little more space, but it would have given the user so much more options. I myself makes such mistakes sometimes, but I change it. I admit it and for the long term benefits of the users, change it.
